Probing Dense Matter with Strange Hadrons

چکیده

The signature of quark-gluon plasma is hard to identify, since the final state observed in the laboratory always consists of the same particles, irrespective of the transitional presence of the deconfined state. What changes is the detailed composition of the observed produced particle abundance. We consider here strangeness , and the pattern of strange hadron production at SPS and RHIC which offer, as we shall see, a compelling evidence for quark-gluon plasma formation. An expanding fireball of quark and gluons breaks up into final state hadrons in conditions which differ from the equilibrium transformation explored in lattice QCD . To understand this behavior we need to understand the pressure of quark-gluon plasma:

Using strange hadrons as probes of dense matter

The spectra of strange hadrons have been measured in detail as a function of centrality for a variety of collision systems and energies at RHIC. Recent results are presented and compared to those measured at the SPS. The effects of the system size on strange particle production and kinematics are examined. I place specific emphasis on comparing A-A to p-p production and discuss how strangeness ...

The Rôle of Strangeness in Astrophysics — an Odyssey through Strange Phases

The equation of state for compact stars is reviewed with special emphasis on the role of strange hadrons, strange dibaryons and strange quark matter. Implications for the properties of compact stars are presented. The importance of neutron star data to constrain the properties of hypothetic particles and the possible existence of exotic phases in dense matter is outlined. We also discuss the gr...

Probing hadronization and freeze-out with multiple strange hadrons and strange resonances

The major goal of the various heavy ion programs is the search for a transient state of deconfined matter, dubbed the quark-gluon-plasma (QGP): A phase transition to this new state of matter is predicted by lattice QCD when a sufficiently high energy density (ǫ ≈ 1 GeV/fm 3) is reached. Strange particle yields and spectra are key probes to study excited nuclear matter and to detect the transiti...

Rigidly Rotating Strange Quark Star

The possibility of the existence of quark matter dates back to early seventies. Bodmer remarked that matter consisting of deconfined up, down and strange quarks could be the absolute ground state of matter at zero pressure and temperature. If this is true then objects made of such matter, so-called ”strange star”, could exist. There are several proposed mechanisms for formation of quark stars. ...

Magnetar oscillations pose challenges for strange stars

Compact relativistic stars allow us to study the nature of matter under extreme conditions, probing regions of parameter space that are otherwise inaccessible. Nuclear theory in this regime is not well constrained: one key issue is whether neutron stars are in fact composed primarily of strange quark matter. Distinguishing the two possibilities, however, has been difficult. The recent detection...
